  Ⅰ. Teaching Aims
  1. Students will be able to talk about their own and others’ abilities by using modal verb “can”.
  2. Students will be able to ask and answer about the clubs they and others want to join.
  3. Students will be able to know the features of the recruiting poster and learn to make one.
  Ⅱ. Teaching Key Points

  2.Target language
  -Can you swim? -Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
  -Can he play chess? - Yes, he can. / No, he can’t.
  -What can you do? - I can dance but I can’t sing.
  -What club do you want to join? - We want to join the chess club.

  1. Learn to make a poster for a club
  2. Tell “can” from “can’t” while listening

  V. Teaching Procedures
  Step One: Warming up and leading in
  Have a free talk with Ss (Get them to know about the teacher and talk about the day and the month. Then lead in the school show.)
  Step Two: Review and presentation
  1. Present pictures of activities about the school show and let Ss enjoy and see what Ss can do in the show.
  2. Then have Ss talk about the abilities of the Ss. At the same time, show the target sentences: What can ... do? Can…?
  3. Have Ss show their abilities by writing down: I can…but I can’t.
  4. Then have short conversations between the teacher and the student, and between the students to practice the target languages. Step Three: Grammar focus
  1. Conclude how to use “can” by showing Grammar Focus and have Ss read.
  2. Work on 3a.
  Ask Ss to write questions and answers with the words and phrases in 3a and then take a picture and send to the teacher.
  Check the answers.
  Let Ss read together.
  Step Four: Role-playing
  T: Bill can tell stories, and he wants to join a club. What club can he join?
  Help Ss tell the answer: the story telling club.
  T: Bob and Jane want to join clubs, too. What can they do? What clubs do they want to join? Let’s listen and fill in the chart.
  Get Ss to listen and fill in the chart. Then have them share the answers. (If necessary, listen twice.)
  Presents rising tones and falling tones for Ss. Then let them read the conversations after the audio.
  Have Ss role-play Bob first, and then role-play Jane with the video.
  Ask one pair to present their role-playing.
  Step Five: Presentation and group work preparation
  T: Our school show needs more students. Here is a poster. Read and fill in the blanks with the words here.
  After Ss finish, ask one student to read to check answers.
  Then have Ss work in groups to make posters for clubs. Then have the group leaders send their posters to the teacher.
  Ask 1 or 2 group leaders to read their posters and the other group leaders to show the names of their clubs to let others know.
  Step Six: Group work
  Make the group leaders sit and the others stand up. Then ask them to go around and join the clubs they want. (Present the target languages on the PPT and give an example to Ss)
  Ask several pairs to present their conversations.
  Step Seven: Homework
  Write what you and your best friend can do and what clubs you want to join. Share it with your classmates.
